Max is normally shy and skittish. He is not a lap cat, he tends to spend most of his time finding dark small places to curl up in or making everything under the sun into his personal toy. When Max does want affection we try very hard not to discourage him. A few weeks ago he started waking me up at 6 am every morning wanting to be pet. This consisted of me dangling a hand off the side of the bed and him petting himself with it. If I dared to remove the hand he would chase it and bat at my arm until I started petting him again. I could forgive six am, I don't get up that much later so I wasn't losing to much sleep.
of course now that we had a routine Max has to change it. Now he has started to wake me up at 4 am by hopping on the bed and licking my arm or trying to burrow under my hand. The worst part is he is so cute I can't bring myself to throw him across the room. I think he is either has self esteem issues or he is a manipulative little cat. Aha the female two legger always wants to pet me so lets make her work for it. See how you like being woken up in the middle of your nap! I shall have my feline revenge.

Or I could have too much time on my hands.

Ignoring your cat may be your best bet. You don't want to encourage it in bad behavior. You may need to start closing your bedroom door if this keeps up. I love cats, but sleep is important.

I remember having to close the bedroom door to keep pepsi out because she was determined to sleep between my legs and was giving me a horrendous back ache in the mornings.
