First, go see Serenity!!!! After you have seen it then read.

We showed up to the theater with 2 Mal's, 3 Inara's, 2 Wash's, a River (me), Kaylee, and a Jayne. People stared and pointed. Being me I ate up the attention and we hammed a bit for the crowd shooting off our character's best lines. In the theater we did a big photo shoot and the manager came over to ask for copies of the pictures to use to promote the movie. Of course we obliged and we ended up getting the whole group down in front to have another picture. Anyone in the columbus area who would like to join us dressing up for movies let me know. The Marcus was definatly intrested in more costumed people to promote and we might be able to barter for tickets.
The first pleasent note (no pun intended) in the movie was the music. The sound track for the show has always been in natural accoustic instruments and the movie did a good job of balancing accoustic and synthasised sounds to make it bigger but still keep the feel of the origenal series. I was a little put off by the characterizations in the first part of the movie, but it was Mal as Joss had written him. Dark, scarred, and having lost almost everything. The reaver attack in the begining was everything I could fear.
Coming into the movie I knew there were two deaths. I spent the entire movie terrified for my characters. Joss and the incredible talents cast were able to reach out and make you love them, even Jayne.
The performances were stunning. I can't think of a single one that was not totally in the world, and in sync. My only nit pick in the entire movie was the death of Shepard book. While plot advancing the cynical side of me said "he's was left alive how long till the got there" and he can make a heroic speach to motivate Mal but not make it long enough for the doctor to look at him. Only a minor jarring note. The truth of Miranda was dark and terrifying with enough shades of realism to make the audience shiver. Mal's gambit at the end to draw the Reaver's out was well thought out "smart" plot. Wash's desperate flight had me on the edge of my seat. Someone was going to die, and Jayne had not strapped in yet. I was terrified. And then, it was all to clear who died and I cried. The part of me that plots is awed. Wash is a great character but his death moved Zoe is a brand new direction. And it works, but I don't have to like it. The scene with Mal vs the operative was the same gritty and painful fighting we have come to expect. The battle against the reavers made me wonder if anyone would survive even though I knew the answer. River, River is terrifying and triumphant. Summer Glau physicality and grace on screen is amazing. I wept openly at the dinosaurs still lining the pilots chair. I need to see what comes next. Zoe, how does she cope? River, is she better now? Kaylee and Simon are so sweet. Inara, well she just needs to whack Mal over the head. That he would understand.

In short I loved it, I hated it, and it was a beautiful story. Go see it. Again. Help it make 80Million so the rest of the story can be told.

The last tally I saw had Serenity at about $11 Million for opening weekend, but the entire approach was to "Grass-roots" it form the begining, and go on word of mouth. It's had solid, if not stellar reviews and is projected to have awesome DVD sales. Obviously, time will tell.

Oh, and what about international release? I know several other countries have followings, did they get a release this weekend as well? Anybody?
