What I find amusing is that the first short story I wrote (7th grade) started with "It was a dark & stormy night," and I know I never read Bulwer-Lytton. I was a Peanuts fan, but didn't get the line from there either. I think "stormy" was one of the words I was required to use in the story.
From that first sentence, I was doomed. I got an A+, but never broke out of my mediocrity.
