I spent the last week drapping muslin patterns on ducky (who had to be padded out with my bikini top and have the front on my corset stufed to make and acurate line). I have a bodice pattern for the cranach I think. I bought about 5 yards of slate blue cotton duct from the buck a yard bin to test out the pattern before I cut the velvet. The doublet was an after thought that has turned into a "wow I'm making progress on this project and I think I'm going to finish it soon!" type of thing.
The first draft I made had a nice flat front, which did not at all fit. I went back and reviewed how other people put their doublets together and curved the front opening. Much better though the last test run had way to much curve. 'Tis much better to cut down then peice on though. Now I need to decide on shoulder treatments and how I'm going to do the skirt. I'm debating between goreing it and making a completely smooth lined skirt, or cartedge pleating it with a flat front, or perhaps some combination of the two... I certainly have enough fabric. I know I want about 3/4 sleeves as and upper sleeve loose and vaguly bell like with tight white sleeves underneath. I plan on striping the white sleeves with some velvet ribbon I have and using more of the white fabric to make either a forepart, or gaurds for the skirt or both.
Then I just need to finish the matching hat and I will have a wonderful 1550-1570's franco-spanish dress of upper middle class. Since the plan for my Faire character when I start running whiteraven a faires again is to be a french jewel merchant it should work wonderfully.. :) Now I just need to finish it....and get a website to put these things on
