I have found my one true love.....
I bought a rotery cutter. If you have been thinking about trying one, do it! They are fabulous!!! I do so much stuff cutting stright lines, all my chemises, my skirts, kimonos, lost of my pant pattens, cloaks, bias tape trim.....I've used it to cut corderoy bias tape and it worked faboulously, the bigest issue I had was that I was cutting through 4 layers because the kit origenally came with just a 18x6 inch board to cut on. I splurged today and used my birthday giftcert and a 40% cupon to buy a big mat, 24x34 and it rocks! I have wonderful stright cut velvet strips that I have been applying to a bias cut black corderoy for a very un historic doublet. In point of fact I am using the simplicity pattern with uber modifications. It for my Larp character Koren. She is a musician/ rouge/ theif/ sneaky sort. Slightly alcoholic (it's not real wine!) and a huge talent for mouthing off. I haven't gotten to play in over a year and I'm looking forward to bringing her back in. She's changed a lot as a character. I first played her a 15 build new character, and she ran through the town fight deathknights, literally with a dagger. And she didn't die! She also didn't hurt the thing. Her background was a street rat on the run from the law, and she was hidding out the the PC rebel city. Much fun entailed. She looked the part of a street rat then. She wore a rediculously ragged shirt that had a huge gap on the side that I patched with leather thongs and dyed brownish red like someone had been hurt in the shirt. I smudged dirt on my face and was outrageously blunt. As she got older, more experienced and more powerful her wardobe changed, she even got a little girly, thanks to a loaner green boddice from a freind of mine that was a little to small. Th guys loved it though. Koren always was a street artist but I added singing and storytelling because it fit her larger then life attitude. A perfect Koren story happen alwost 3 years ago (the weekend after started dateing Josh). Koren was sheparding a bunch of newer players arround figuring that she can play healer and be back up muscle. I was wearing a dark cloak at the time and dark clothes (of course I'm a sneaky rouge sort*). I hung back skulking in the shadows while the rest of the people tried to negotiate with a pack of goblins (four year old, racoon acting creatures that can kill you). The negotiations failed miserably and battle ensued. Again I stayed back because I wanted the newer players to have fun. They died miserablely. Half of them were on the ground, the healer forgot his healing spells and the rest were either trying to heal or pinned with a "magic" spell. Fortuantly they had take down most of the goblins. There were three left. I came charging in, took out one goblin and
my apprentice took out the other one. The third one started towards me and I screamed as loud and shrill as I can (I can hit 1st soprano notes) and flared out my cloak. "I am the BANSHEE QUEEN!" I roared. And the last goblin fled in terror right in to the waiting sword of one of the pinned warriors. No character died and we got the treasure. I love coming up with the unconventional ways to "win".
* to my IBR and IWG brethern, rouge in this case is the class from NERO my larp. At Faire Koren would deffinatly be a wench!
Erm so anyways I was talking about sewing. The doublet is reversable, Brown twill in the inside and the bias cut corderoy on the outside. The black "dressy" side is lined up with the corderoy making cheverons in the front and back seams and has deep green velvet appliqued in cheveron front and back. It didn't entirely match at the shouder seams but everything else is lovely. I am adding tied on sleeves also cut to make cheverons (and maybe some black cordery bias tape to make them look a little dressier on the plain brown side). The doublet will tie up the middle with corderoy strips also made with my rotery cutter because buttons seem like a bad idea when a peice is reversable and could get beaten into your chest. I'm doing a green shirt for under it to go with the back and green one (sense a color theme here) and back poofy piratly pants. And my spiffy to the knee leather boots that need trachtou sole stuff on them. fun fun.
The Tudor dress is pending me getting off my butt and tearing apart the sleeve that is 1/2 and inch to narrow so that I can actually wear a chemise under it with out looking liek I am flexing through the cloth. I have them pinned in place now and after that it is just a matter of whipping them on and adding the black gaurd that binds the neck. And trim. And pleating and adding the skirt, which is pending me fixing the hoops on my farthingale to not be so big. I have decided to use some black china silk for the french hood, salvedged from a .99 thrift store shirt. I still need to finish the undersleeves, new chemise, and forepart/petticoat as well. Did I mention I'm also sewing for my freind ladynero, a shirt for her, a kimono like top for larp and a series of tails for a fox (kitsune). And Josh is asking for a new costume, tunic, doublet, shirt, pants and cloak, and another freind is asking for a couple of tunics, and I have the florentine overgown, and french dress to finish. Classes, crossstitch, writing, music, no wonder I never have time to eat!
