Quiet today.
Nov. 5th, 2008 08:30 amIt's over and I will say what most probably guessed. I am happy Obama won. And I'm not going to argue that point here and now because there is another point I want to make. Prop 8 in California passed. California looks like they will ban gay marriage. On a day when we as a nation faced one fear we bowed to another.
I think it's very clear to anyone who reads my journal or has ever met me that I support the right to be married by anyone. All of the religious rhetoric "The bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman" is bullshit. Read it. There's a hell of a lot of marriage is between one man and two or more woman.
Gay marriage has not broken this country. Massachusetts has not become a hell on earth because they stopped discriminating. Being gay is not a disease, it is not wrong and it is not immoral. It will not make my marriage to Josh any less valid, nor will it bring rampant anarchy or chaos in the streets.
Who you marry is a private decision between you and the parties involved. The government should not have the right to tell anyone who they can or cannot marry providing it is safe, sane and consensual. (And please the tired arguments of "then why can I not marry my dog" are specious at best. Consensual implies intelligent consent.)
I try to not take firm stances on issues. I see both sides, and usually it is a sea of gray. This one though, I have set deep roots. Today is historic in that barriers have shattered but there is more walls to come. Please look deep at this issue. Look into your heart and soul and see past the fear. We as a country are stronger and better then that.
*** Edited to add*** Please, I know we don't all agree but no flaming or I'll delete comments. That applies to both sides.
***Edited again*** Sorry but this is turning to flames. My Journal and I'm calling it done. If you want to continue the debate please find another forum.
