I have found my one true love.....
Mar. 13th, 2005 01:31 amI bought a rotery cutter. If you have been thinking about trying one, do it! They are fabulous!!! I do so much stuff cutting stright lines, all my chemises, my skirts, kimonos, lost of my pant pattens, cloaks, bias tape trim.....I've used it to cut corderoy bias tape and it worked faboulously, the bigest issue I had was that I was cutting through 4 layers because the kit origenally came with just a 18x6 inch board to cut on. I splurged today and used my birthday giftcert and a 40% cupon to buy a big mat, 24x34 and it rocks! I have wonderful stright cut velvet strips that I have been applying to a bias cut black corderoy for a very un historic doublet. In point of fact I am using the simplicity pattern with uber modifications. It for my Larp character Koren. ( Assorter Larp/NERO ramblings cut for your conveince )
Erm so anyways I was talking about sewing. The doublet is reversable, Brown twill in the inside and the bias cut corderoy on the outside. The black "dressy" side is lined up with the corderoy making cheverons in the front and back seams and has deep green velvet appliqued in cheveron front and back. It didn't entirely match at the shouder seams but everything else is lovely. I am adding tied on sleeves also cut to make cheverons (and maybe some black cordery bias tape to make them look a little dressier on the plain brown side). The doublet will tie up the middle with corderoy strips also made with my rotery cutter because buttons seem like a bad idea when a peice is reversable and could get beaten into your chest. I'm doing a green shirt for under it to go with the back and green one (sense a color theme here) and back poofy piratly pants. And my spiffy to the knee leather boots that need trachtou sole stuff on them. fun fun.
The Tudor dress is pending me getting off my butt and tearing apart the sleeve that is 1/2 and inch to narrow so that I can actually wear a chemise under it with out looking liek I am flexing through the cloth. I have them pinned in place now and after that it is just a matter of whipping them on and adding the black gaurd that binds the neck. And trim. And pleating and adding the skirt, which is pending me fixing the hoops on my farthingale to not be so big. I have decided to use some black china silk for the french hood, salvedged from a .99 thrift store shirt. I still need to finish the undersleeves, new chemise, and forepart/petticoat as well. Did I mention I'm also sewing for my freind ladynero, a shirt for her, a kimono like top for larp and a series of tails for a fox (kitsune). And Josh is asking for a new costume, tunic, doublet, shirt, pants and cloak, and another freind is asking for a couple of tunics, and I have the florentine overgown, and french dress to finish. Classes, crossstitch, writing, music, no wonder I never have time to eat!
