I found this to be an interesting argument that you might find interesting. It's on forgoing the normal route of publishing via big publishers and instead save craploads of money doing eBooks instead (no print costs, can advertise yourself, get to keep all the money, etc), self-publishing and self-promoting.
Might be an idea to get your friends into too, to make a collective with many eBooks and share the task of advertising online and attracting the clients for your books.
